The word etiquette actually comes from the French word 'etiquet'. Louis XIV's gardener was so annoyed by people walking over his lovingly kept grass that he put up etiquets (signs) to stop people from doing so. Unsuccessful as this move turned out to be, the King of Versailles actually passed a decree banning people from walking beyond the point of where the etiquet was placed. Etiquettes eventually became cards that were given with invitations instructing people on where they should stand and such party guidelines.
One innovative idea that a loving gardner came up with has now become a massive never ending rule book on what behaviour is acceptable! As much as i dislike people openly burping and farting, why must we tie ourselves up with so many constraints in the name of being proper?
